What if Blizzard was creating tools for machinimakers ?
That was the original idea, writing a letter and ask for specific tools, things that could help us all making better machinimas.
The idea grew and we got now a direct contact with Blizzard EU and they really are waiting for this letter.
So far we would be asking for an offline world creator/viewer, a complete model viewer with animation scripts, lipsync routines etc.
If you have more ideas about what could help you making machinima, please go ahead.

- Demo recording and playback feature in game
- Keyframing custom camera paths
- The complete model viewer you suggested, with added support for the scripted camera
- The complete model viewer you suggested, with added support for exporting .mov files with alpha (instead of always having to green screen)
- A scene creator / mapviewer, with the support for the scripted camera
- 3dsmax importers for .m2 with full bones and animation support
- 3dsmax importers for the terrain and .wmo files

For the viewer it would be nice to have an easy to use lighting tool, exp: "Campfire" light (not a model) then be able to position around the character and/or scene.

Hey Olibith, thanks for the initiative! I like your ideas and dopefish's, but I think we should kinda come to them with a plan of some sort. Maybe offer ideas for tools we would love to see in the immediate future as well as some options in the later future.

Immediate Future - Generic
- Audio and video capturing support for Windows machines.
- Possible access to game sound files

Immediate Future - Model Viewer
- An official model viewer, complete with animation selection, control, dress room, much like the current WMV.
- Preferably with external MPQ support for our own custom models.
- Animation scripting/queuing would bbe particularly useful, allowing us to set a string of animations for a character to cycle through.
- Advanced camera control functions and scripting such as setting and saving camera positions, keyframes, etc, to easily allow scrolling and panning between them (including pan speed settings).
- MOV files with alpha support is a must.
- Ability to turn on and off sound effects for an animation.
- The ability to save a model's information (position, clothing, animation sequence, camera position, etc).

Immediate Future - World Viewer / Creator
- An offical world viewer, complete with doodad, mob and NPC creation and the ability to control thier animation loop
- Flying camera with comtrollable speeds.
- Preferably with external MPQ support for our own custom models.
- Fog creation, colour settings.
- Weather and time of day control.
- Keying and scripting camera for allowing us to pan smoothly and such.

Distant Future - Generic
- 3DS Max (and other 3D software) exporters / importers for .m2 with full bones and animation support
- 3DS Max exporters / importers for the terrain and .wmo files
- 3DS Max exporters / importers for scripting

Distant Future - Model Viewer
- Custom Weapon glows, customize armour colour curves (ie. change the overall colour scheme)
- Built in lip syncing tools
- Bulit in support for creating custom animations
- Dynamic character lighting

Distant Future - Map Viewer
- Advanced animation controls and keying
- Allowing us to key model location in the viewer
- The ability to to load model viewer's character models, including the animation sequences, lip synced speach, etc.
- Allow sounds sources (inluding characters) to be set to either dynamic (thus colume changes relative to the camera - more realistic) or set to ambient (sound levels are constant no matter where the camera is).

Thats all I can think of at the moment, let me know what you guys think.

Instead of model specific lights, the ability to place light emitters with different options like spot light, ambience and so on. Also, being able to keyframe their motion and their options (like changing color over time).

For the model viewer and map viewer, keyframing would be awsome

Of course, pretty much everything is highly unlikely that they'll actually develop, since that takes time and cost money, and it would only serve as a fan service from their side. Perhaps we could motivate them a little bit with saying that for every WoW machinima we make, we promote their game

Yeah, I couldn't believe that they actually submitted them with the patch. That was really humble of them

A Machinima Private Server. That would make things great, easily accessible and not so hard to program. It would be enough to appease us, yet give us a huge variety of things to use/access.

I just want blizzard to give us access to their "WoWedit" program and an offline-mode with which to use it. The game itself is capable of all manner of things now.

I hate the .divx format. I hate machinima.com. I hate them both for the exact same reason.

Let's see.. the most important thing is that all gnomes should have 10 different settings for vibration.

Oh wait, wrong thread. *cough*

Well, I think this has been said in one form or another but a Garrys Mod for WoW would be the thing that we'd need. Something that allows us to build our own areas (or filming sets) to the existing WoW. But before every nice little technical detail - one thing should always come first: useability.

The possible program(s) should be easily approachable, but still professional. A good ui and camera controls, those two could be the main priorities.

I don't know about you others but I would be willing to pay for this tool. But only if it surpasses every free third party solution on the "market".

Dont have to, they could make it without players and spells and so on :P Then it would just be a movie tool ^^

Two main things come to mind, at the moment.

1. Custom camera paths.

2. Some sort of animator. It gets frustrating having to fraps in model viewer with a loop of walking then a loop of jump, then a loop of the in-air animation, then trying to splice them together, etc. If they could somehow how some system where it uses coding such as:

Animation.run(3); //3 being the number of animation cycles it goes through.
Animation.jump(1);
Animation.jump_midair(7); //Stays in midair for 7 "cycles"
Animation.land(1);

And to somehow how the animator know how to fill in the gaps, so that it has a nice, smooth transition for say the run to the jump and so on.

Sorry if my wording is a bit confusing.

Fraps works just fine for windows - you talking about another proprietary capturing program??
You can open the game sound files already through MyWarcraftStudio.

Realistically, many of the things you guys are asking for require work on Blizzard's part to create, and I don't see that they have any motivation to do any of this for us as we are only a small fraction of the paying community.

Maybe just because our movies are enjoyed by a large fraction of their actual/future paying community and because upcoming games will have this kind of features.

Didn't you ever wrote anything to Santa ?
