So we've got this Christmas machinima contest going full-steam over at WeGame with me judging. Grand Prize is a brand new MacBook. Second-fourth place prizes include new professional microphones, camcorders, ipods, preamps, soundsticks and lots of other stuff. We also have six honorable mention prizes--making 10 prizes in all.

Check out the rules here:
http://www.brandonmdennis.com/images/wegam...ontestRULES.pdf

Chat with other movie makers in the contest forum here:
http://www.wegame.com/forums/Christmas_Mac...a_Contest_2008/

Summary:

Must be Christmas-themed.
Must be between 1 and 10 minutes long.
Must be appropriate for people under 18 years old.
Must contain our WeGame intro and outro slides (linked in the forums).
Your submission cannot compete in other contests, but you CAN release it to the public at any time (read rules for full details).

...think that's about it :P

Hey Oxhorn, quick question about what the contest rules mean by "any game" ... does this mean any game at all whatsoever, or any game that's listed on WeGame?

Any game at all :)

WeGame has a new machinima contest! We've got $5,000 worth of prizes, including a new Area-51 Alienware desktop PC, hard drives, graphic cards, professional headphones, speaker systems, microphones, games and much more. It is open to everyone, including folks overseas, and you can enter as many movies as you like (they MUST be made by you and during the contest period). It starts August 1st and goes until August 31st. Myself and other WeGame staff will be the judges and you can use any game you want.

This is a great opportunity to pick up some seriously sweet swag if you are into machinima. Check out the full contest rules, prize list and other goodies on the Contest page, here at WeGame:

http://www.wegame.com/group/AugContest/

I'm really excited to see the entries!

Thanks everyone for all your kind words and constant support! I had a lot of fun making this one but it took FOREVER--I think it even took longer to make than Inventing Swear Words 4. Anyhow, I hope you guys like it, and let me know what you think :)

There are lots of bonus features listed in the movie's description too.

Hey Tristram! This is an old guide and is a bit outdated. I actually have a nice job now that supplies me with all the video editing programs I need :) I have AAECS3 and the entire creative suite, which rules.

Thanks for the offer though! maybe you could find another starving machinima maker to hand it off to :)

Hey Kodell! I actually work at WeGame and am not sure how you could have been treated poorly. The fine folks at WeGame have treated me very well and happen to be some of the nicest people I've met.

Did you have a question about the site that I could answer?

You can use Gary's Mod to take the TF2 characters and pose them, but you can't animate motions. The closest you can get to having any sort of control over them is by recording a game and the going through it and making your own custom camera angles.

You can still do some clever things with just the in-game emotes. Here is an example in TF2 someone did set to a Monty Python sketch:

WeGame is hoping to host some more contests in the future that are not game-specific, but for now we are hosting an Everquest 2 contest. I know most here (or anywhere) do not play the game, but you can go to the Everquest 2 website and download a free 14-day trial of the game, which is just enough time to make a short, quick submission to the contest.

The movie has to be "Brew Day Festival" themed, and you can see the full contest details here:

http://www.wegame.com/group/EQ2BrewDay/

You can download a free trial of Everquest 2 here:

http://everquest2.station.sony.com/

Prizes are provided by Ideazon and Sony, and include a really sweet headset and special collector's edition "Brew Day Festival" drinking glasses (which we have here at the office--they aren't as cool as, say, the steins you can get at cafepress, but they are frosted glasses with collectible Everquest 2 art, and are pretty cool to have a beer in.

Anyhow, I hope to see some more submissions! I am working on a new contest idea that is open to any game and divided by genre categories, with even better prizes, and I'll be sure to post news of it here when it commences :)

Well I just accepted a new job in California working for a start-up company called WeGame.com. They are paying me to make machinimna, as well as help other users use their site to make their own machinima. One cool thing about this gig is that I still retain full creative control over my movies. I'll be making other things too, but I will have time to work on my own movies, which should allow me to produce content much faster than I have been (which was pretty fast, considering I was either working or in college full time).

What makes WeGame different from sites like YouTube is that it actually has a client you can download that will allow you to record footage in-game. This means, no more paying for Fraps. The quality is not quite as good as Fraps yet, but it is getting there quickly, and soon it should make Fraps obsolete, considering WeGame is free and has no watermarks, and Fraps is, what, $30?

You can also publish whatever you shoot instantly to WeGame. So if, for instance, you are shooting an interview in-game and don't need to edit it or anything, just click "publish to WeGame" and it automatically gets thrown up on their site. You can still use the footage on any video editing program like Premiere and upload a composited movie manually later, if you'd like. The quality on WeGame is much better than on YouTube in standard mode, and there is even an additional HD mode that allows you to record at an even better quality.

I'm working on Inventing Swear Words 4 at the moment. I've finished all the audio recording and editing--now I just have to start on the video. As soon a I finish it, I'll give everyone an update. In the meantime, you can watch a little movie I made chronicling my move from Seattle to San Francisco here:

http://www.wegame.com/watch/Oxhorn_s_Move_to_California/

And you can find out more about WeGame.com here:

Ah, sorry, missed this earlier. I used the CC light sweep effect on the character clips. Then I just change the color, made the direction go the way I wanted, and then, in the case of the fire, used intensity and did The Wiggler to give it random values :)

I might have an opportunity here to get a computer to do machinima on, and I'd like your advice on what to ask for. Right now I make all my machinima on a dinky little laptop that I bought in 2004, and I really haven't been in the computer market since then.

So, what should I get? Is there a pre-assembled computer that would be perfect for heavy-duty machinima making, or should I build my own, and if I should build my own, what should I be sure to get? I'd prefer a computer ready-made that will be able to withstand the heavy demands of running multiple applications (premiere, AE, photoshop, WoW, fraps) with no lag.

Also, I'm sure I'll need some Adobe Products. Premiere, AE and Photoshop being a must. What others should I require? Encore and Soundbooth?

What about Ultra?

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuit...oduction/ultra/

Is it something I should bother with?

Thankee much!

Model Viewer is fussy. The only reason it works on my machine is because I have an old version of WoW installed. All I can suggest is to download the latest patch for WoW and be sure you are using the latest version of Model Viewer.

Yes I could do that, but it would make the overall size of the movie smaller. I would just like to trim the width, but keep the height the same.

If I could take my widescreen project and import it into a full screen project, I could then trim the movie scene to scene so that the important parts are shown well in the FS version--"formatting" it to fit FS. That is what I would like to be able to do, and maintain the movie height.

I ran into this problem when I went to release Hat vs. Barnaby, but I didn't want to delay it's release so I just uploaded the widescreen, 16:9 version. The problem with this is that on most viral streaming sites like YouTube, the movie gets squished into a full screen version. I'd like to avoid that for my next movie.

For my upcoming movie, I would like to make the movie in 16:9 widescreen for my own personal use and for sites like Stage6, but I would also like to make a file that is full screen for sites like YouTube. I tried to do this last time by making my movie in widescreen, creating a new project with full screen settings, importing my 16:9 movie and moving around the clips so that it looked good, then exporting.

The result, however, was still a widescreen version, despite me rendering it from a full screen project. I did this all in Premiere Pro. Is there a way to make a movie that is widescreen and then export it as full screen? Or is this something I would have to do in After Effects?

Is it possible to output HD AVI or HD WMV with Premiere Pro?
